Faith Behind the Screen: What it's like to follow Jesus in the Arab world

In many parts of the Arab world, choosing to follow Jesus comes at a cost - and sometimes, that cost is everything. While the gospel is spreading rapidly, especially in the age of digital media, the reality for many new believers is one of isolation, secrecy and risk.

We recently heard from a young man who fled his home country because of persecution:

“The isolation and uncertainty weigh heavily on me, but I draw strength from my faith and the inspiration of leaders like you.”

For believers like him, faith grows in private - behind locked doors, in whispered prayers and in late-night messages to our follow-up teams. Public worship, baptism and community are luxuries they often cannot enjoy freely.

The risks are real. Leaving Islam for Christ can mean:

•             Rejection by family and community.

•             Loss of employment or education opportunities.

•             Surveillance, arrest, or threats from authorities or extremists.

•             In some cases, violence or death.

In countries like Saudi Arabia, conversion from Islam is illegal and can carry severe penalties. In others, like Egypt or Jordan, social pressure and legal gray areas create intense fear for those seeking Christ.

According to Open Doors’ 2024 World Watch List, 7 of the top 10 most dangerous countries for Christians are in the Muslim world, where persecution is often family and society-driven.

Despite the danger, secret believers often speak of an unshakable peace.

“For Christ himself has brought peace to us…” Ephesians 2:14

What gives them strength?

•             Scripture - especially the Psalms and the words of Jesus.

•             Online communities and discipleship.

•             Knowing they’re part of a larger, unseen Body of Christ.

•             Support and prayer from people like you.

You are a part of their lifeline. A simple gospel video or social media post can become the moment someone meets Christ - or rediscovers hope in the midst of fear.

When you partner with us, you’re standing with believers the world never sees but heaven knows by name. Please keep praying for secret believers. Their faith is strong, but they need encouragement, community and the assurance they’re not alone.

“Remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.” Hebrews 13:3
